A Book Related Memory (JSBT #2) || Never Have I Ever Book Tag

Welcome back everyone, how has everything been for you all? Today I’ll be participating in Just Some Bibliophilic Things and another exciting book tag!

Without further ado, let’s jump into the question of the week for JSBT, hosted by Riddhi from Whispering Stories! Click here to see her answer for the week and here to learn more about it.

This week’s question: One book related memory that you love.

Ooh that’s a good one.

When I was Primary 2 (which is second grade I think? – I was 8 years old), we were required to do a show and tell of our favourite book. Naturally, I was extremely excited. But the catch was the presentation had to be in our mother tongue. For me, that is Chinese and back then, I was not all all fluent in Chinese! 😳

I was considering choosing a book in Chinese such that it would be easier to talk about but stubborn me decided to go with my favourite book then which was Matilda by Roald Dahl. 📖

As Matilda is in English, I had to write my speech and then translate the whole thing into Chinese which was a daunting task. Furthermore, I had to memorise the speech word for word due to my poor Chinese, which was nearly impossible for 8 year old me. 😥

Thanks to Google Translate and my persistence in wanting to share the love of my life, I managed to do so and delivered my speech, frequently stumbling over many words. 🤪

But the thing is I did it! And that was something I remember vividly. 😊

Never Have I Ever Book Tag

It’s been slightly more than a month of blogging but I can fondly say that I am super attached to book tags! Thank you so much to Paper Hearts for tagging me… (sorry I didn’t get your name haha)

This creative tag was created by Madame Writer. (yes that was a mouthful to say)

  • Don’t lie.
  • Have fun!

Never Have I Ever…read a later book in a series before reading the first book

No! or yes! (I beg your pardon, Ignorant me isn’t sure how to respond)

I unknowingly read Just Call My Name before I’ll be There by Holly Sloan. Which was JUST AWFUL because I was so confused, thinking that Just Call My Name was a standalone. And then I knew all the spoilers for the first book. 😕

Never Have I Ever…burned a book

Nah nah nah NOOO NEVER! NOT EVEN MY LITERATURE BOOKS AND REQUIRED READINGS WHICH I WAS QUITE ANNOYED AT…🚫

Never Have I Ever…read a book I knew I would hate

Erm yes eheheh… I read Allegiant, having an inkling that I would dislike it based on the first two books but I still did because I NEEDED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED however much the failed POVs which sounded the same deterred me.

Never Have I Ever…wrote a fanfiction about my favourite books

Unfortunately I’m not good at writing! So I have never done that.

However I can recommend an amazing fanfiction for Keeper of the Lost Cities fans which happens after Flashback but before Legacy on Wattpad called “Keeper of the Lost Memories”. It is so gripping and Keefe is as cool as ever. 😆

Never Have I Ever…loved a book when I was young, yet hated it when I got older

There are many MG and children’s books I still adore but I have grown out of many. I DO NOT hate any, The Rainbow Fairy series which I read centuries ago is just something I wouldn’t revisit again though I had much fun when I read it at a young age.

Never Have I Ever…dressed up as one of my favorite literary characters

Nope. 😦

Never Have I Ever…hated a book by an author I love

Again, I don’t hate this one. But Catalyst compared to all of Laurie Halse Anderson’s books wasn’t that great, with me unable to connect to the protagonist while all of LAH’s books always made me emotional.

Never Have I Ever…gone into a bookstore to buy one book and come out with many more

I quote what Paper Hearts wrote: “Who goes to a bookstore just to buy ONE book?!” Perfect response. 👍

Never Have I Ever…read the ending of a book before reading the beginning

NO NEVER.

Never Have I Ever…read I book without the dust cover

What are you talking about? I do that all the time so I don’t damage the precious dust cover!✨

Never Have I Ever…skim read nearly half a book

my literature books

Never Have I Ever….pretended to have read a book that I haven’t.

Nope! Errr I guess I did pretend to read a book I DNF-ed… does that count?

My addition: Never Have I Ever…saw the movie before the book.

Unfortunately, I am guilty towards my own prompt! I normally try not to haha. But I saw the movie A Dog’s Purpose and have not read the book! In my defence, I didn’t know it was based on a book. 🐶

Speaking of which the movie is really moving and reduced me into an ugly state of tears!

Have you ever read a book you know you would hate? Or seen the movie before reading the book?

    1. Thank you Nehal! Indeed that felt like such an achievement that I still remember it many years later. ☺️
No worries and I look forward to reading your answers! ❤️

  2. Ooh, I loved your answers! And the incident was really fun to read too, plus I’m a little jealous of you right now, I have fascination towards certain languages and Chinese(Mandarin simplified) is one of those, but I never managed to learn it. Gah, someday for sure!
Thanks a million for tagging me! I’m sure you’ll be getting my answers quite soon. Hope you like mine, too!

    1. Thank you for your comment Tiction! Haha Chinese is an interesting language as it feels like drawing… it can be quite hard to pick up as one has to literally memorise a lot 🤪 (there’s no alphabet) but it is really beautiful! Hope that you can have fun learning it one day. ☺️❤️

  3. I admire 8-year old you for doing that book report! I’m well versed in the art of google translating presentations, though I was 20 at the time, and it ain’t easy! 😀

To answer your questions at the end – yes, I have watched a movie before reading the book. Saw The Fellowship of the Ring before I read it, the movies are what got me into reading the books and fantasy in general. But no, I don’t think I’ve ever purposefully read a book I knew I wouldn’t like. Maybe read books that I thought I likely wouldn’t like but there was always the hope that I would be wrong and actually enjoy it.

    1. Haha, well said… google translate’s literal translations end up pretty humorous at times!

Oooh that is nice! I actually DNF-ed the Lord of the Rings a while back and hope to get back to it… but if it still doesn’t click with me then I’ll go see the movie, thanks for sharing! 😊

      1. Yeah, it’s not too great at English to Asian languages, definitely makes some strange decisions! (I was translating to Japanese).
I can see why you might DNF Lord of the Rings these days, it is a fantastic book but I guess it might be a harder book to get through if you’re used to modern fantasy. Classics and older books can be a slog to get through if they’re not your style (most classics aren’t mine but damn did I have to read a lot of them for my degree!)

        1. Good point, I think apart from being used to modern fantasy it was a little slow at the start and I am way too impatient! Haha, I should try again and learn to adapt as I forsee having to read a lot of them in the future like you for my studies. 😊

  4. Yes- seen movies before the book- sometimes the movies are what made me love a book or series. And yes, in way read a book I know I would hate- that was back when I close minded to tragedies.

        1. Same, I loved the Narnia movies! Wished that they turned the whole series into movies. 😆

        2. They only did like the first three- wonder why they stopped.

It is hard to think of some movies I fell in love with by book first- can think of one example. Lord of the Rings- books first and then the movies

  5. Ahhh I love this post Cherelle!! I loved reading your bookish memory — I imagine that must have been so nerve-racking for your younger self. So congrats to past Cherelle for getting it done!! 🥳

And thank you so much for tagging me. These questions look so fun!! And I relate about not knowing how to respond to never have I ever. Is it no? Yes? English is extremely confusing 😂😩

    1. Thank you for the comment! Indeed I was already stammering because of my poor mother tongue and it was made even worse with nerves!

My pleasure and haha, the struggle is real! 😆

  6. Writing a book report…in Chinese… at 8 years old… and memorizing the whole thing?! That’s pretty awesome!

I don’t think I have ever read a book I knew I would hate but I have watched movies of books I haven’t read. I watched Ready Player One and the first Percy Jackson movie and still have not read the books. I don’t think I will read RP1 though because it doesn’t interest me and I tried reading the Lightning Thief and I couldn’t get past chapter one.

This seems like a fun tag (I might do it myself sometime in the future)
    Awesome post!

    1. Thank you Eryn! It sounds quite impressive now, but back then the end product was a mess! 😂

Ahh I see… well I haven’t watched any of these you mentioned! I’m not much of a sci-fi fan and RP1 doesn’t really interest me that much as well so I think I’ll cheat by watching the movies haha.😆

Aw, I’m a bit sad you didn’t get hooked onto Percy Jackson but I can understand why. It starts out a bit awkward and fast which can be confusing, it that why?

Yes please do! (Also how do you make the words bold in a comment?😅)

      Liked by 1 person

      1. It’s definitely amazing!

I don’t generally like sci-fi either but I went with friends and I did fairly enjoy the movie.

I’m not sure why that happens every time I pick up Percy Jackson because I didn’t far enough but I need to give it a proper chance and if I still don’t like I guess it’s just not for me.

To bold it, I put the the text in this format: text goes here

  7. Thanks for the tag – this looks like such a fun one! I love your answers too, although it seems a bit mean of a teacher to make kids do a presentation in a language they aren’t fluent in. 😬

  8. Awesome post! What an intensive thing for you to have to do when you were 8. I can’t imagine making the children I teach to do something like that. It sounds like it took a lot of courage and perseverance so well done to 8-year-old you! Thanks so much for the tag, I can’t wait to work on my own answers! 🙂

  9. Hey Cherelle! Thanks so much for tagging me! This is such a cute tag and I loved reading your answers to the prompts. I read The Magic Treehouse and The Rainbow Fairy series when I was younger.

Never Have I Ever is confusing. Hopefully I’ll be able to answer them correctly 😅 Loved this post!

    1. Hello Katie, I am looking forward to your answers. Ahhh I haven’t read The Magic Treehouse series. It looks really fun and something I would have devoured when I was younger! 😆

Haha, glad to find another person who is also thoroughly muddled as well! 😂

    1. Ahhh coincidence I just finished it and am on the next book of the series… It was a bit problematic I would admit but I still liked it haha, which part was a no no for you?

  10. Omg I love this book tag!!!😍 Your answers!🤣

And I know this is going to be horrifying, but I actually watched Harry Potter movies before I finally read the books in 4th grade.😅😂 Thank you so much for tagging me!🥺💕 I’m a little busy and behind other tags, so it might be awhile until I can post my answers for this, but I will get to it! Sorry in advance!😅

  11. This was such a nice post! Thank you for sharing such a precious memory with us ♥
As for me, I am guilty of reading a book (two, actually) that I knew I was going to dislike, and that’s the Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo 😢 I didn’t even try to pick up the third book honestly.
Also, this is totally unrelated, but your blog is super cute!
