5 books I want to squeeze in before 2020 ends (JSBT #5) 📚 | Character Chat #2

Hi everyone! We are officially nearing the last 3 weeks of 2020, the year that will forever be notorious. Today, I’ll be sharing 5 books that I want to squeeze in before this year ends, thanks to the prompt from the weekly feature: Just Some Bibliophilic Things, that Riddhi @ Whispering Stories hosts!

How many books are left for you to read in 2020?

1. An Ember in the Ashes (Sabaa Tahir) – series

Yes, I shared this with you guys in my November Wrap Up and it makes an appearance again! This is a series I have heard so much love about… and I am proud to say that I am CURRENTLY READING IT NOW!

2. The Poppy War (R.F. Kuang) – series

This is another series I have talked about wanting to read in December so I shan’t say much but I am so excited to read it because it’s historical fiction + fantasy + Chinese influence + the fact that I binge the whole series!

3. Legendborn (Tracey Deonn)

This cover is just gorgeous. And I would read Legendborn simply for that. Thankfully, I have a better reason to do so, because it’s Book Buzz‘s book of the month for December, a book club that Eryn @ Love Your Shelf runs on Goodreads! I honestly don’t know much about the book but I’m hoping for it to be as beautiful as the cover!

4. Vicious (V.E. Schwab)

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue absolutely stole my soul, you can read how much I loved it here! V.E. Schwab’s writing and storytelling skills was phenomenal and obviously I NEED more! Being the lazy reader that I am, I chose one of her duologies to start with instead of the Shades of magic trilogy haha… and I must say I am both spooked and captivated by what Vicious is about!

5. The Astonishing Color of After (Emily X.R. Pan)

This book is about a girl who loses her mother, but doesn’t think that she dies, in fact she thinks that her mother has turned into a bird. That premise sounded absolutely heartbreaking to me and I am looking forward to seeing how the topic of grief is being explored here! It sounds like a beautiful tear-jerker!

Character Chat #2

The second part of this post is Character Chat, a weekly feature hosted by Rachel @ A Bookworm’s Paradise, you can read about it here!

A character who would lighten up your mood even on your worst days?

I thought that Rachel’s answer was perfect… Keefe is definitely one who can make me smile, it’s one of the reasons why the Keeper of the Lost Cities is a huge comfort read for me!

If I had to choose someone other than Keefe, it would be Noah from And Every Morning The Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman. This was my first book by Fredrik Backman, in fact it was a novella and I was totally wrecked by it…. how less than a 100 pages managed to achieve that kind of emotional level is beyond me. Noah is the little boy on your right sitting on the bench and is a grandson. He has such a sweet and innocent personality but you can really see how much he cares for his grandfather. He always looks on the positive side and seems to be a little ray of sunshine that I’m sure will be able to cheer me up anytime.

Have you read any of the books mentioned above? Who is a character who could cheer you up anytime?

Also, does anyone know how to format the images such that they appear in a straight line without the text going wonky?

  1. The Poppy War looks so interesting!! I don’t know if it’s my type of book, but I’m very intrigued! I can’t wait to hear what you think of it if you read it this month ☺️ And one of the characters that always cheer me up would be Kit from Shadowhunters 😍

    1. I know right! The covers are 🤩… I will definitely be sharing about it if I read it (unfortunately, I am terrible at sticking to tbrs haha)… Ooh I haven’t read any Cassandra Clare books yet, (I am so behind haha!) but I’m glad there’s one cheery character there, will be looking out for Kit when I eventually enter the world of Shadowhunters… thanks for your comment Pilar! ❤

And I’m really looking forward to what you think of The Poppy War!! It’s gotten all the hype but I need your help deciding whether or not I should take a chance on those very scary content warnings 😬😅

Best of luck with finishing all these books Cherelle!! I hope you love all of them 💖

    1. I just finished book 1 so I can shout back at you: EMBER EMBER EMBER!!! It was SO good, I love the characters so so much ahh… I’m really glad that I managed to get the whole series (except the last one ahh) from the library so I can binge read my way through!! Ahh I’m not that far into the series yet but I’m so scared and thrilled by your reaction to the last one haha!

True true, the content warnings look super scary yikes… I read a bit more about it and have decided to take that leap of faith, hopefully all goes well!

      Thanks so much Abby! 💕

  3. Not ready any of those, but read one of those authors. Shades of Magic Trilogy was my favorite series I read this.

As far as squeezing in (don’t think I can think of much): I Was Anastasia. It all depends on when I finish that book

  4. Fredrik Backman is such a phenomenal writer, I didn’t know that book was a novella! I’m going to need to squeeze that in before the end of the year. I will definitely be getting to The Poppy War next year. Good luck finishing these books, you got this!

    1. Agreed, he writes so beautifully ahh…this was my first Fredrik Backman book and was a little hesitant because I’m not a big fan of novellas but it was SO good, I’m excited to check out some of his other books, what have you read of his?
      Thanks Ali! 💕

  5. Ooh! I want to read The Poppy War, however I’m a bit scared because a reviewer I admire said it has a lot of adult content. And I’m not sure whether or not it’d be okay for me to read… :/

    1. Ah I had the same dilemma, the trigger warnings seemed pretty intense… I was too intrigued though by the Chinese culture and fantasy element so I’m deciding to take the leap of faith, hopefully all goes well! Will definitely let you know my thoughts on it so you can choose to try it or keep away first! Thank you for your comment Sunny! ❤

  11. I love the Ember Quartet 😆 I am doing a reread of the books and am up to A Reaper at the Gates! I hope to finish the series in 2021!

I’ve also read the Poppy War and it was very good but I didn’t seem to love it as everyone else 😬 I think it’s just a me thing or maybe because I read it in the midst of the initial hype 🤷🏽‍♀️

I hope you enjoy Legendborn when you get to it and I hope you get to all the books you want to before the years end!💙

Yeah… hype is a curse but can also be a gift. I might reread the Poppy War to see if my thoughts change in the near or far future. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the series.
